Admiral Kelly Turner Signs TIME Cover  &Explains His "Terrible" Knickname

Admiral Richard Kelly Turner appeared on the cover of TIME Magazine On February , 1944 in a portrait by the cover artist, Boris Chaliapin. Turner inscribed a copy of the cove to a friend in 1948, writing, "You have here my "Terrible Turner" snarl, motivated by smelling dead enemies on Guadalcanal in 1942 (By the way, the "Terrible" epithet was concocted by TIME in NY)"
